FAQs

How do we find Maunsel House?

Maunsel is at the heart of our 2,000 acre Estate on the outskirts of the village of North Newton - which is one and a half miles from North Petherton and 2 miles from junction 24 of the M5, 45 minutes to Bristol and 150 minutes to London.

We are six miles from the County Town of Taunton with regular train service to London Paddington. (about 120 minutes)

We are 'brown signed' from North Petherton and also from A361 (the quick route to Taunton)

What is our 'unique selling point?'

We think it's the fact that Maunsel is not a hotel but a much loved and rather eccentric family home, steeped in 'Slade family History', which is yours to takeover.

Maunsel is exclusively yours to celebrate in however you wish, your own Manor house for the day, weekend or however long you want to stay.

There is no reception desk, no keys for the rooms unless you want one, guests can wander down to breakfast in their dressing gown! It's your own house party but with all the Maunsel team on hand to make sure everything happens as you want it to.

Will we be looked after?

Yes emphatically! We have a brilliant team here and you will get to know us in the run up to your wedding. There is no need to hire a freelance wedding planner as that is what we are here for. 'We also act as your 'Master of Ceremonies' so no need to hire a man in a red coat to bark at your guests.

What is your capacity?

We have a wedding this coming March with 25 guests and then in May we have a ceremony that has 200 guests, so size really doesn't matter to us.

Our Ballroom can seat 102 for wedding breakfasts and civil ceremonies or 150 with the mini extension marquee fitted to the open french windows enlarging the room.
For outdoor ceremonies we can seat over 200 around our antique bandstand.
The roofed pergola for alfresco dinning can seat up to 200 guests around round tables.

How many can stay the night?

There are 13 bedrooms in the house and a further 11 in the cottages, within staggering distance of the Estate, making a grand total of 48 guests.

We are currently refurbishing ancient barns and cottages as we speak, so we will keep you posted when they are ready!

Are there local Hotels and B&B's/self catering?

Yes lots and we have a list we send out to all brides and grooms, including a local hotel one and a half miles away in the next village.

Can I bring my own cake?

Yes and we have lots of recommended suppliers on our list should you need help finding one.

What about flowers?

The great thing about Maunsel is that it is so 'well dressed' you don't need to spend a fortune on floristry and we always have fresh flowers on the Hall table, so just let us know your colour scheme and we will get our florist to arrange something to fit in with you.

We have lots of recommended florists on our list so we can help you source one.

What about food?

We consider this to be one of the most important elements and have therefore put a lot of time and effort into finding fabulous caterers to provide scrumptious meals for you!
They are very flexible and offer a huge choice whether you want fillet steak or bangers and mash.

We also produce Maunsel Suppers which are a great inexpensive option for a relaxed night before the wedding.

What about the Wedding Breakfast?

The Ballroom can seat up to 102 and with a mini extension can seat up to 150. And for the Summer time we have a fully roofed pergola with over head heating and chimineas.

Where does the drinks reception take place?

The Georgian Dinning room, Hall, Library and Bar are all great for your drinks reception. The reception rooms although grand and elegant never feel too big and impersonal - they have an intimacy and help create a very warm, relaxed and comfortable feel. At Maunsel we cater for all tastes and for small or large wedding parties.

In the summer it is lovely to dine alfresco under our roofed pergola in the walled garden. Should the temperature drop as evening draws in we can turn on an overhead heater and light the many chimineas we have which line the pergola and our large fire pot. The pergola is covered with scented climbing plants such as Jasmine, honeysuckle, roses and wisteria and helps create a very relaxed atmosphere and can seat up to 200.

Dancing is great in the Ballroom or outside under the pergola, or if you wish to have a marquee or a wigwam on our specially designed site.

Can we bring our own wine and champagne?

Unlike many venues we do offer couples the chance to celebrate with your own alcohol should you wish to do so. At Maunsel we charge a per head storage and handling fee, which is a much better deal for you than a corkage fee.

Is there a corkage charge?

No, we prefer to have a storage and handling fee which is charged per head rather than a corkage charge which is per bottle. It covers you for the night before your wedding your stay in the house and up to the end of the wedding breakfast when the Maunsel Bar opens up. We then collect up your wine from the tables and put it to one side for the Maunsel after party later in the evening.

We hear that some venues ban red wine and stillettos, can we have both at Maunsel?
Hell yes! we're all big fans of red wine here so make sure it's a nice one as Sir Benjamin is very partial to a glass or two.
As for stillettos - the higher the better!

When does the party end?

Our license for the bar and music ends at midnight or 1pm, if you pay for an extension. (Maunsel has it's own bar and charges normal Somerset pub prices. Tabs can be arranged with cash and/or card behind the bar) Once all the guests have drifted away back to their hotels, B&B's etc, the Maunsel after party can begin. We will bring out your alcohol or the remainder of your drinks package if you've opted for that. You are more than welcome to party into the small hours with your own alcohol and the Maunsel cd player.
Last one to bed, to switch off all the lights! Cottage guests welcome too.

What are the access and departure times?

Access to main house, reception rooms and three Bridal party bedroom's from 12 noon.
Access to all other bedrooms and cottages from 2pm.
Departure from the house of all guests and belongings by 10:30am

Are Children allowed?

Yes they are very welcome and they love running around and exploring. A treasure hunt is a great idea for them and can be arranged, as can childrens' entertainers, creche and babysitting.

Our caterers can provide childrens' meals at a reduced rate for little people.

Can I have a Church wedding?

Yes Sir Benjamin has the gift of the living of the 'Alfred Jewel Benefice' and couples have the option of marrying in any one of the three churches in the Benefice.

St Michaels Church is situated on the Maunsel Estate and 2 minutes walk from the house. It holds a maximum of 50.

St Peters Church in our village of North Newton holds 150.

St Mary the Virgin is a large Minster in the next village North Petherton 11/2 miles away.

What photography?

Whatever the weather Maunsel House it's lakes, lawns, 100 acre Park lands and 2,000 acre Estate offer a stunning backdrop for photographs and if you need a photographer we have lots on our recommendations list.

Confetti can be used, although we prefer natural petals or paper which is bio degradable, not the sparkly stuff.

How do we pay?

Cheque or a credit card machine is available.

Can we use Chinese lanterns?

We do not allow the use of Chinese lanterns as they pose a risk to the local wildlife and livestock.

How many meetings do I need?

At Maunsel we are very keen to give you as much access to the house as possible in the run up to your wedding. We had a bride and groom once who had 13 meetings before their wedding and another who didn't have one and did everything by email.

We certainly won't harass you if you don't want us to, but we recommend a big meeting to work on a running order for the day and a couple of catch up meetings nearer the time. A meeting with the caterer is a good idea and you are of course welcome to hold your meetings with suppliers like photographers and florists in the house.

Family members often like to view the house before the wedding and we are more than happy to give them a tour so they know where they are coming to and feel part of the wedding.

In short, we at Maunsel are very flexible and can realise that every wedding is unique and that couples like to use the house differently, which makes life so much more interesting for us!
We will tailor make your event to your specifications and promise not to rail road you into inflexible packages.
